Dr Shahbaz Ahmed Shahzad is an international security scholar specializing in strategic studies, nuclear deterrence, and emerging military technologies. His research examines the intersection of technological innovation, defence policy, and geopolitical dynamics in South Asia.
He holds a PhD in International Relations with a specialization in Strategic Studies, a post-doctoral certification completed with distinction, and an MPhil in International Relations, which he earned as a Gold Medalist. He also holds master’s degrees in International Relations and English, securing first position in the latter. His research, published in W, X, and Y category journals, focuses on artificial intelligence in warfare, nuclear stability, and crisis management.
Beyond academia, Dr Shahzad is a qualified Arabic interpreter and a Chartered Member (CMILT) of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, UK. This book builds on his doctoral research, offering a policy-oriented assessment of the impact of artificial intelligence on regional security, strategic competition, and defence planning in South Asia.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most important technologies of the twenty-first century. It is transforming everything from the economy and politics to healthcare, communication, and national security. With the ongoing development of AI technologies, they have become integral to military operations by driving advancements like rapid decision-making, improved intelligence, autonomous systems, cyber warfare, and precision targeting. These developments offer increased efficiency in operations but also present significant ethical, legal, and strategic issues. AI has emerged as a crucial force in shaping the security landscape of the modern world, revolutionizing military strategies and tactics. AI has become a pivotal component in modern-day security, reshaping military strategies and tactics.
One of the most complicated and delicate regions in which to study these developments is South Asia. India and Pakistan have faced political conflicts, traditional wars, and border conflicts and have had a longstanding strategic rivalry since gaining independence. The region's introduction of nuclear weapons caused a delicate balance of deterrence. This competition is now taking a new dimension with the rapid pace of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. AI is increasingly being considered in defense planning, intelligence operations, surveillance, and future warfare concepts. Both nations have been looking to modernize their military, and AI has been playing a significant role in their defense plans, intelligence efforts, surveillance, and future warfare plans.
As AI becomes increasingly weaponized, the region's instability, strategic competition, and crisis management all become questions of great importance. While the integration of artificial intelligence into military systems can aid in strengthening defense capabilities, it can also contribute to the further proliferation of nuclear weapons, the acceleration of the arms race, the shortening of decision-making cycles, and the risk of miscalculation. The discussion continues on the opportunity to enhance military effectiveness through the use of AI and the danger it poses to regional peace and stability and international security. This book sees AI as a strategic game-changer, not just a technological advancement, that affects the nature of military competition and security. It explores the nexus of technology, defense policy, and regional geopolitics, offering an understanding of the changing contours of war and the future security paradigm of South Asia in the age of AI. In the process, it joins the debate on new military technologies and their impact on one of the world's most important and vulnerable areas.
This chapter examines the changing dynamics of AI and its applicability to contemporary warfare, especially in terms of reconciling artificial intelligence with the geometry of power in the contemporary international system. It illustrates AI’s significance in steering power capacity in precipitating an AI race internationally. Focusing on South Asia, the article, in the context of the confrontation between India and Pakistan, considers the original outcomes of the forced concentration on ordinary and equipped security points. More research should be conducted into what these two countries represent to AI to expand their military interests and the resulting implications for the area’s stability. Subsections discuss recreated data on military change, nuclear and non-nuclear military advancement, specifically in Pakistan and India. Based on the questions and objectives formulated for the chapter, it seeks to give a comprehensive analysis of the role of AI in shaping contemporary warfare and its implications for regional security to enhance the comprehension of the modern approaches to security.
The application of advanced AI is impacting the promotion of modern warfare in a deep manner. According to global governments, AI has become an important aspect of national security and defence, and this has changed people’s strategic thinking. AI infusion into combat systems has boosted the capability of military forces and made it easier for nations to wage war. This shift is paving the way for a novel and sophisticated AI-driven weapons generation. Despite nations pouring their resources into AI-enabled weapon systems, they are still enhancing their conventional warfare capabilities. Although high-technology warfare has increased the effectiveness of conventional forms of conflict, governments are increasingly compelled to reconsider their strategic approaches. As a result, current world politics is defined by the remarkable attempts to create and employ advanced AI-assisted warfare techniques (Khan and Anwar, 2021).
The peacemaker power and AI influence in the South Asian region: A case of India and Pakistan rivalry.
Both countries are incorporating AI-driven warfare strategies, following suit with the global trends. For instance, the Indian Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is also using AI through intelligence simulations to enhance military plans and lessen conflict. This approach has become even more important today to show that AI is important not only in helping companies to make strategic decisions but also in aiding them in operational planning. Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has progressed in different directions by setting up its own information warfare wing covering cognitive electronic warfare. This technology is a combination of new-generation strategies that engage abilities to spot, conceal, and eliminate the enemy’s movements with artificial intelligence. The cognitive electronic warfare system can capture awareness, knowledge, perception, and respond in a cognitive form to adversaries, thereby illustrating how cognitive AI can transform modern battlefields (Cheema, 2010).
It demonstrates that the application of AI in the South Asian context has a destabilising effect on security concerns at regional as well as international levels. This is important since South Asia is one of the fastest-growing regions in the global economy. This is an indication that as AI becomes more intricately involved in military policies, its capacity to increase the possibility of war and affect the world economy also increases. When used in antagonistic ways, AI poses a threat that extends beyond any manmade borders. Technological progress in warfare presents dangers to international stability and the equilibrium of the global economy, and endeavours to state that AI needs more regulation and cooperation in its further development (Chesney & Citron, 2019).
