Sultan Bahoo (1630–1691) wrote well over a hundred books on mysticism and religion, but for the ordinary reader in the Punjab he has always been, above all, a poet. It is in the Abyat that his beliefs about the fundamentals of mysticism find their most powerful expression, and the haunting “HOO” that closes each verse in Punjabi gives them a tender, unmistakable music.
